  • 19 - Contracts. When you start to work for money

Motivational speakers are professionals and take themselves seriously, as they should. You should contact your lawyer or a lawyer for hire and ask if he can write you out contracts for your motivational speaking seminars and tell him your price, what you are responsible for, legal action and anything you want to add. Though hiring a lawyer to do this may cost up to a hundred dollars an hour, it is only a one-time fee and an investment in yourself. Make sure that you get a lawyer that understand this type of work, it is preferable if they have drawn out contracts before.

  • 17 - Web Promotion

A service like selfpromotion.com should be everything you need to properly promote your business. What they do is an automatic search engine and search index submissions that would usually take hours or days for a person to manual sit there and do this site by site. I trust this service, but some sites need to be submitted manually like Yahoo and Open directory. As long as you follow their directions that is posted on the site, you should be fine. You can only add 10 website there for free, anything above that and you have to pay $10. Paying for this service is great though as it offers much more tools and the ability to promote as many sites as you want.

On top of your own website with quality information, other great things you may want to do is write your own book and get it published. Online, you can write articles to submit or start a blog for more web presence, but keep it updated often or the search engines might just skip you.

  • 16 - Offline promotion

This is the type of promotion that we used to do "back in the day". This practical promotion is still the best way today. By using physical materials that people can see and touch they will hold on to it the dearest. This type of promotion is also the costliest.

The first thing you may want to get is some business cards to promote yourself. Business cards cost about thirty to forty dollars per thousand cards. But it also depends on the design you get. About ten thousand cards is the absolute most I would recommend. Fins out what price per thousand you feel comfortable about and then spend it on the design you think people will embrace or be impressed with the most. They can simply look at your card once and find out whether you are serious or professional enough for them to hire.

Alternatively, you can hire an outside publicist who will make press releases and releases in the press, newspapers, ad, etc;... A professional (and well paid) publicist will do a much better job than you may dream of doing, but this is only if you have the finances for such a task. For the average speaker this may seem like overkill, but it is extremely professional and depending on your niche, it may be needed.

  • 15 - Your Hosting

Think of it like this. Your Domain is your land, your hosting is your house. Without a house your land is just an empty space. If you do not have any technical skills in creating your own website you will need to go to a hosting service which allows easy templates to be processed so that all you have to do is put in your information and the template does everything else behind the scenes.

  • 14 - Your Domain

Buy your domain from godaddy.com for a couple bucks. Name your domain something memorable and use hyphens to space them and try not to run it off. For example name your domain name should be John-Motivational-Speaker.com instead of Johnmotivationspearker.com. You do this so when they search for motivational speaker the term "motivational speaker" is already inside your name since search engines recognize hyphens for spaces.

The business of motivational speaking is highly competitive. It is recommended at the very beginning to keep whatever job you have now and develop your skills, writing and speech qualities and your niches in your spare time. Slowly start your resume, starting small with youth and gradually get older, than start at an immature level and then slowly climb to the more mature audiences. This grassroots level of applying your work will slowly build good word of mouth of you working with all ages and all audiences.

  • 11 - Finding a Mentor

Another way to succeed is to find someone retired who is doing what you are doing right now. You can do this by calling businesses and asking if they have ever hired a motivational speaker or knows anyone who has. Go directly to the bosses or their assistants, they will gladly assist you most of the time. With this newfound network connection you can simply call and ask how he got started. You can say you're writing a report online or be more honest and just say you need his help, you're a starter and do not know where to begin. I explain a lot, but there are some things which you can only learn in the field or things hard to convert in writing that only the voice and expression of someone with experience can do.

  • 10 - Your speaking skills

You should feel comfortable speaking. Even if you sweat or tremble the audience won't notice, only you will. What you feel will be amplified by five of what the audience sees. If you stumble it can spell disaster in your eyes, but to an audience they'll only chuckle and want you to continue. Only you can feel your heart beating. The eyes on you "burn"Remember, they paid money to see you.

  • 9 - Writing the speech. Or hiring someone who can do it better.

Here's the truth. Motivational speakers do not always write their own speeches. They often will hire a speechwriter. They will search either on craigslist.org or the yellow page for writers on hire, someone to rewrite their speeches, ghost writers or a public relations firm. Online will offer many tip and tricks as well.

  • 8 - Pick A "Niche"

A niche is a targeted audience from a larger group. For example:

    1 - Earth
    2 - United States
    3 - Population
4 - Fishermen of that population
5 - Salmon fishermen of that population
6 - Salmon fishermen in Washington State
7 - Salmon fishermen in Western Washington State
8 - Female salmon fishermen in Western Washington State
9 - Female salmon fishermen over 60 in Western Washington State

    and so on...

Choose the targeted niche. Find what qualities are needed. if a group needs confidence then target what qualities you have or had of confidence in a situation and tell them how you overcame it, and tell them in a memorable humorous way. A group will usually have tons of qualities they need, you can get this information from the person who hired you usually.

  • 7 - What should you speak on?

My advice is you should speak on things you love and desire. IF you don't absolutely love talking about strength and endurance then don't talk about it. If you don't love to talk about not quitting in the face of adversity then don't speak on. Whatever it is, bring to them the solution to their misery. The solution should be the number one focus, so cut down on tangents and stay on point.

Technically, you can speak on anything you desire. If you were a boxer or fighter you can still tell engaging motivational speak to young minds and adult business minds if they speech you need to make is on persistence, endurance a tough mind and unwillingness to quit in hopes of success. It is not about what trade you did, but what skills those trade possesses because ultimately the person that hires you only wants you to motivate in some way to increase their earnings, not become a living example for them, that's THEIR job to do. Face it, you most likely are not famous, so your life story does not matter to them, it's what situation you faced and how you overcame it. it It is always a plus to be an to have experience or be an expert although.

  • 5 - The Right Speaker

Time is money, people have invested in you to speak and they want their moneys worth. They WANT you to succeed in motivating them. They DO NOT want you to fail. They DO NOT want to waster their time. If hired for a particular situation you must decide on the absolute best speech you can make they goes with their situation. Learn beforehand from your hirer what is happening now, the history of the business or place, what did work, what should work, what will work. Then you will use your knowledge and commonsense to work the rest. Know these things weeks before so you can write and memorize the perfect speech, then trim the fat off that and add even more perfect speech.

  • 4 - Learning to shut up. The Final Statement.

A good motivational speaker knows when to shut up. They never add more than they need to. Therefore making there speech more quality. A good motivational speaker will trim off the fat of his speeches on purpose just to give extra quality. A group doesn't need to know the speakers life story, but only the experience or knowledge that applies to the current situation. The last thing a motivational speaker says is what is remembered the most. In the final statement, a motivational speaker will usually go over everything discussed and give a summary of his advice. They also will usually ask or demand something from the audience to put indirect pressure on them.

  • 3 - Effects of a positive motivational speaker

One of the jobs of a motivational speaker is to engage the group's thoughts. This is why many motivational speakers also possess great skills in psychology. A group or workforce's negative attitude will effect their behavior and ultimately their skills at work. You may be receive bad performance or lackluster performance and not even know it if a negative mindset is in place the whole time. Humans are not robots and need a humanistic direction, if you treat them like dull robots, they'll become dull robots.

A motivational speaker will remind them why to think positively. Eventually if a group thinks positively enough they will become optimistic, their confidence and attitude will change. This will lead to a difference in sub-quality to quality. When a motivational speaker reminds the group to stay positive even in the face of difficulty you will receive work that you may not have, since a worker would have gave up or quit. Though all these are great and should be applied it is inly a hope that this will lead to more money and not a guarantee.

  • 2 - Why do people hire Motivational Speakers?

Most businesses that hire motivational speakers do so to realign a bad situation, increase morale or teach about objectives that their employers, students or friends need to apply in their life. A head of an organization, boss or colleague does not have the tools to talk and be listened to, so indirectly they hire someone with experience and professionalism to do this task. A good motivational speaker will ignite a poor or weak workforce so in the end, the employer receives more money. It is great to hire a motivational speaker to increase efficiency in work or actions, as it is always better to have 3 hard workers than 5 weak workers.

A motivational speak will offer a fresh look at a situation and a view from outside of the box. If the motivational speaker has experience in a the same difficult situation that a group faces he can offer his views and solutions and tell what becomes of these situations if certain steps are taken, either positively or negatively.
